Tattoo and Location: Octopus grabbing anchor - hands
6. Artist: Chris Bailey in Glendale, AZ
7. The Story: While apprenticing for Chris, I had a dream about a hand tattoo with an octopus and anchor that spanned the tops of both hands - essentially it would be one piece! I woke up, drew a fast sketch, sent it to Chris, and we made it happen. I love traditional tattoos and this is one of my proudest pieces! I have now been tattooing for about 2 1/2 years and will be tattooing my first hand piece in the coming months!

1.
5. Tattoo and Location: [1] Ivory Billed Woodpecker on left lower back [2] Inukshuk on back of head

6. Artist and Shop: The woodpecker was done by Byran in Fayetteville Arkansas at Clockworks Tattoo and the Inushuk was done by Joe in Sault Saint Marie Michigan at Dragon’s Eye Tattoo

7. The Story: The woodpecker (so lovingly named, Bernard) is from the cover of my favorite book “Still Life with Woodpecker” by Tom Robbins. It is meant to commemorate my love and appreciation for Robbins but also to signify the time in my life where I grew an appreciation for my education and my ability to influence the world. Additionally, the match and stick of dynamite act to remind me that the walls that surround and inhibit us are only a small bit of explosives away from freedom.
The inushuk is to commemorate the many years I have spent (and the many to come) canoe tripping in Northern Canada in the traditional Ojibwa and Chippewa style as well as to act as a constant reminder to follow my head.

Name: David

The Story: Before coming to college I didn’t really care about issues happening around the world, but when I became an anthropology major I discovered the world needs peace and people willing to support it. I want world peace but we must all rise above our own inner contention to achieve it.

Name: Jake

Tattoo and Location: Celtic tree of life adaptation on my inner left wrist

Artist: Kevin at Holepunch in Flagstaff, AZ

The Story: A few years ago, I suffered a traumatic head injury that had a large impact on my life. For some reason, I kept the hospital bracelet on my wrist for years after. I felt that it was a daily reminder as to how lucky I was to be alive but it had a very negative feeling associated with it. I decided to replace the tattered piece of plastic with something a little more permanent, beautiful, and meaningful. I altered the tattoo a bit so that was a little more personal and symbolic. This was my first tattoo and a very cathartic experience. Even a few years later, I still look at it everyday and am constantly reminded at how lucky I truly was.

Name: Judson and Tasha Covert

Tattoo and Location: Alice from Alice in Wonderland on the left side of my lower back

Artist: Bob Verderame at Tat-Fu Tattoo in Flagstaff, AZ

The Story: When I was little, I loved Alice in Wonderland and when I was six-years-old, my grandfather gave me a teddy bear that I promptly named Alice. My grandfather passed away when I was fourteen and six years later, I decided to get a tattoo as a tribute to him. While this tattoo started out as something just for him, I ultimately decided to make it be for my grandmother as well. When I would visit my grandparents and later just my grandmother, I would always stay in what was called the princess room, which was a bedroom with a huge canopy bed. While I was going through my copy of Alice in Wonderland and looking through the original engravings, I found a picture of Alice wearing a crown and knew it would be the perfect way to celebrate my grandparents on my skin. My grandmother ended up passing away about a week after I got this tattoo and now I feel like I carry both of them with me every day through this tattoo.

WTF Is This?

We here at Education Ink are fascinated by tattoos and we’ve noticed their increasing presence at colleges and universities.
